The company was established on 1st January 1937 by the C.U.F. Group of companies when this group took over the Rocha Shiprepair Yard situated on the North bank of the Tagus estuary at Lisbon.
In September 1961 the company adopted the name Lisnave - Estaleiros Navais de Lisboa at the time when the company expanded on to the South bank of the Tagus where a new yard - Margueira, was being built, with facilities to accommodate the largest vessels needing repair at that time. On 23rd June 1967 the new yard was officially inaugurated and the facilities comprised three docks. In 1971 a new dock was opened having a capacity of 1.000.000 dwt.
In 1973 a new yard called Setenave (Estaleiros Navais de Setubal) was built by Lisnave in Setubal to cope with increased demand, both for ship repairing and shipbuilding. This has three docks, one of which has a maximum capacity of 700.000 dwt.
In mid 1997 a restructuring plan was implemented to better meet ship repair needs in the next century. This involves consolidating repair facilities at Mitrena yard in Setubal into a new entity after the general upgrading of the existing yard and the construction of 3 additional Panamax size Drydocks. This restructuring was completed at the end of 2000, with all shiprepair activities having being transferred from Margueira Yard to Mitrena Yard. All activities are now concentrated at Mitrena in Setubal.
